Metro Truck Exposure Rankings

All 159 US metropolitan areas with at least 150 confirmed retail fuel sites, ranked by the share of sites within about 650 feet of a road carrying more than 5,000 trucks a day, with every supporting column from the accompanying research.

Data edition: 2026-09-13-v15 Site records: Public place records and tank registries, September 2026 Road traffic: FHWA HPMS 2024 Metros ranked: 159

A site is on a truck corridor when a road segment within about 650 feet of it carries more than 5,000 trucks a day, single-unit plus combination, in the federal road inventory. Traffic past a site is exposure, not gallons sold. The ranking is built on the share of a metro's confirmed retail sites on such a corridor; the shares at 2,500 and 10,000 trucks a day and the interstate column are the checks. Read the analysis behind these figures.

Truck traffic on the busiest road

The bar splits a metro's sites by the heaviest truck traffic on any inventoried road within about 650 feet: no road, up to 2,500 trucks a day, 2,500 to 5,000, 5,000 to 10,000, more than 10,000. The last two bands together are the share on a truck corridor.

Supporting columns

The shares at 2,500 and 10,000 trucks a day use the same roughly 650-foot (200-meter) radius. Within 0.6 miles of an interstate is proximity to a functional system 1 segment, not access to it; no ramp geometry is loaded. Busiest road is the annual average daily traffic, all vehicles, on the highest-volume segment within that radius, at the median site. Travel centers is the count of confirmed sites in that channel.

Scope

Metropolitan Statistical Areas on the July 2023 delineation with at least 150 confirmed retail sites and a confirmation rate of 80 percent or more. 159 of 393 qualify. Puerto Rico is held out. Unattended cardlocks and fleet islands are excluded from every count.

What these figures are not

Traffic past a site is exposure, not diesel gallons, truck customers or captured demand. Site counts are not fuel volume, revenue, margin or market share. Truck counts are missing on about a tenth of interstate segments nationally and a quarter in Maryland and Pennsylvania, so some metros' shares are floors. No trend is shown; one structure edition is published.
