Metro Fuel Competition Rankings

All 159 US metropolitan areas with at least 150 confirmed retail fuel sites, ranked by the share of sites with two or more rival parent groups within one mile, with every supporting column from the accompanying research.

Data edition: 2026-09-13-v15 Site records: Public place records and tank registries, September 2026 Metros ranked: 159

A rival is a confirmed retail fuel site of a different parent group within one straight-line mile. Sites whose operator is not public count as their own parent. The ranking is built on the share of a metro's sites with two or more such rivals. Read the analysis behind these figures.

Rival groups within a mile

The bar splits a metro's sites by how many distinct rival parent groups operate a confirmed retail site within one mile, straight line: none, one, two or three, four to six, seven or more. A site whose operator is not public is its own parent.

Supporting columns

Sites per 10,000 residents uses the 2020 decennial population and is unavailable for the Connecticut metros. Top-3 share is the three largest parent groups' share of sites whose operator is public, a share of sites and not of volume. Hypermarket fuel within a mile is the share of sites with a grocery or club fuel site inside that same straight-line radius.

Scope

Metropolitan Statistical Areas on the July 2023 delineation with at least 150 confirmed retail sites and a confirmation rate of 80 percent or more. 159 of 393 qualify. Puerto Rico is held out. Unattended cardlocks and fleet islands are excluded from every count.

What these figures are not

Site counts are not fuel volume, revenue, margin or customer market share. Proximity is straight-line, not drive time, and is not evidence of price competition. No trend is shown; one structure edition is published.

Edition

These figures are pinned to edition 2026-09-13-v15 and do not change when new data is published. The Fuel & Convenience Market Explorer follows the current release and may differ.
