National market overview

US lodging supply: properties, hotels and rooms, and what is on public record

Loading latest…
Lodging properties — Hotels, B&Bs and condo hotels that public place and fire-safety records agree on
Hotels and motels — Expected count: listings weighted by how likely each is to appear on a state licence roster
Hotel rooms — G2M estimate, within ±10% in a held-out test against reported counts
Properties with a reported room count — From state rosters, SEC filings, assessor and gaming records, or Wikidata
Property profiles — Properties with a street address, each with its own page
States with a published room total — Reported by the state, or estimated where the estimate passed the test

Properties by type

Listed lodging properties. Type is read from public place categories and names.

Loading property types…

The hotel figure above is lower than the listed hotels: it discounts listings that may not be operating hotels.

Rooms by brand segment

Estimated hotel rooms in branded hotels by chain scale, ±10%. Bars show rooms.

Loading segments…

Independent hotels are counted, but their room totals are not published: tested against reported counts, they run 8 to 30 percent low.

How to read this research

Methodology and limitations

This explorer organizes public evidence on US lodging supply. Read each figure with its geography, basis and edition.

Sources and freshness

A property is listed when public place data (Overture Maps, Foursquare Open Source Places) and the U.S. Fire Administration hotel list agree it is lodging. Agreement between sources is not proof that a property is open today.

Sources update on different schedules; the dated edition is not a real-time feed.

Which listings count as hotels

A model trained on five state licence rosters (Florida, New York, Wisconsin, Hawaii, Texas) scores how likely each listing is to be a licensed hotel. Hotels are listed above a fixed threshold; the national hotel count weights each listing by that likelihood.

B&Bs and condo hotels are listed when two sources confirm them.

Room totals

Room totals come from state rosters where a state publishes one (Florida, Hawaii, Wisconsin). Elsewhere they are G2M estimates, published with ±10% only where the estimate came within 10 percent of reported counts in a held-out test.

States where the test could not be run, or where resort and casino supply is too large to size reliably, show counts only.

Property pages

A property page shows a room count only when a public source reports it: state rosters, SEC filings, county assessor or gaming regulator records, or Wikidata. Modelled per-property counts are never shown.

Property counts measure supply. They say nothing about occupancy, rates or revenue.
